History
The history of Mercedes-Benz is a complex one and in terms of names, one that regularly confuses people interested in the history of this great brand!
Mercedes-Benz is part of the large German company “Daimler”. The links between these names go back a long way. The history of the “Benz” part goes back to the earliest days of motoring. In fact, Karl Benz’s 1886 “Motorwagen” is widely accepted by historians to have been the first true petrol-powered motor vehicle.
At the same time, Gottfried Daimler was also working in early car design in Germany and formed a manufacturing company in his name. The Daimler company produced a vehicle in 1901 called the “Mercedes”. In 1926, after various corporate manoeuvres, the two companies (Benz and Daimler) became known as “Daimler–Benz”. That changed latterly to Mercedes-Benz. Just to confuse people, the rights to the brand name “Daimler” had earlier been sold to a British company. It rapidly established itself as a separate British prestige marque. Today, that ancient British link to Mercedes-Benz in the form of a trade name continues to be owned by Jaguar-Land Rover.
The famous badge had its original origins in the mark made on a postcard Daimler had sent to his wife in the 1870s, indicating where his accommodation was. It received its surrounding circle in 1916 and has since gone on to be one of the most widely recognised trademarks in the world.
During the 1930s the company continued its historic reputation for innovation. Much of its output was concentrated on luxury vehicles including the iconic 770 series. During World War II, as was the case with most European and North American car manufacturers, its output was largely shifted towards military production. After the war, it rapidly became focused on luxury car production and quickly captured a significant portion of that car market as the decades passed.
Why a Mercedes?
Like many luxury marques, Mercedes-Benz has diversified into a range of models including some, such as the A series, which were intended to appeal to the family-compact driving end of the marketplace. They also continue to be a significant player in commercial vehicle production.
However, they remain most commonly associated with luxury and performance vehicles including:
