Design and Features of the Ineos Grenadier
Ineos wisely chose BMW to supply the 3.0-litre straight-six engines for the Grenadier. The diesel variant delivers 246bhp and a maximum torque of 550Nm, while the petrol version offers 282bhp and 450Nm.
Given the vehicle's rugged nature, buyers might lean towards the diesel engine. However, the turbo petrol engine mirrors the diesel's low-end torque effectively, with its maximum torque available from 1,750 to 4,000rpm.
The ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, common to both engines, smoothly transitions up and down the gear ratios. In the petrol version, it can hold gears longer, optimising the wider power band. The petrol engine even produces a pleasing low growl under hard acceleration. Although the diesel engine is slightly louder and rougher, it remains smooth and refined compared to other vehicles in its class.
The petrol Grenadier accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds faster than the diesel, but both models share a top speed of 99mph. Choosing between the two engine options is challenging due to identical pricing. Nevertheless, we'd slightly lean towards the diesel due to its slightly superior off-road performance and fuel economy.
Interior and Comfort of the Ineos Grenadier
The interior design of the Grenadier is built to underscore its ruggedness. It feels constructed to withstand heavy-duty use, with many creature comforts being left out.
In the luxurious Fieldmaster edition, you're offered leather upholstery, floor mats, heated front seats, a rear-view camera, heated mirrors, a heated windshield, and puddle lamps. Keyless entry, however, is not available; there's little in terms of electronic driving aids, and soft-touch materials are absent. The BMW-sourced shiny gear shifter distinctly stands out.
Contrary to modern car interior design trends, the Grenadier's cabin strikes a different chord, and it's all the more appealing as a result. The broad centre console is filled with large, chunky buttons and switches, accessible even with gloves on, offering relief to those who are weary of modern cars' touchscreen menu systems.
Looking up reveals an aircraft-style panel overhead, this panel houses a complex array of buttons for the off-road mechanicals, lighting, and more - a design quirk that would surely be appreciated by any aspirant chopper pilot.
As for the navigation, stereo, and infotainment system, the 12.3-inch infotainment screen is perhaps the most distinctly high-tech feature in the entire car. It integrates data typically found on a driver's screen, such as speed, current gear, fuel gauge, and tire pressures, along with stereo and navigation functionalities. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are also supported.
Pricing and Value of the Ineos Grenadier
The Grenadier's pricing is straightforward, with both engines costing the same. The Station Wagon model starts at £58,000, with the Trailmaster and Fieldmaster editions costing an additional £11,000. While the Grenadier's fuel economy isn't impressive, its long warranty and minimal safety and driver assist systems make it a compelling choice for those seeking a rugged, reliable off-road vehicle.
